Here are some dog people and cat people can agree on: "The Secret Life of pets" is hilarious, sweet and just as fun for parents as brats, they take with them to the movies. The basis for the computer-animated film is quite simple - just what do our animals get up to when their human owners go off to work. And if Illumination Entertainment - the animation studio behind "Despicable Me" films - is to be believed, our domesticated cattle shed RĂ¥gers wild, partying, drawing and getting into all kinds of problems, including street fighting and carjacking.
Max (voice of Louis CK) is a rescue terrier live a happy New York life with his owner Katie (Ellie Kemper), until she decides to bring home Duke (Eric Stonestreet), a giant hairy beast dog Max looks like a threat to his perfect only-child dynamic. Prank occur and the Duke and Max soon find themselves lost in the city and robbed of their collars after a run-in with some tough alley cats.
It gets worse for the couple when they narrowly avoid controls and meet Snowball, an adorable little Bunny (Kevin Hart) - which proves to be a gritty and hilarious leader of a massive underground gang of former pets bent on revolution against the people. Snakes, SeaMonkey, fish, a pig, cats and birds populate the abdomen - a collection of French hairballs and reptiles.
"All we have suffered in the hands of people. They say that love us, then throw us out," Snowball declares passionately.
"It's not our fault that we do not see the ad," a couple of SeaMonkey exclaim.
While the domesticated duo convince snowball they also hate people - after all they want to do is go home - the weasel his way into his cattle cult, only to pull out of an initial involving a viper bite.
The fur starts flying for Max and Duke when they accidentally kill the viper, teasing Snowball and his crew chasing them through the sewers, in the river and finally all the way to Brooklyn.
"They say that everyone is going to Brooklyn," snowball pig friend exclaims that the couple across the East River in search of Max and Duke. "I'm not talking about hipster real estate trends," Snowball deadpans.
Led by Gidget (a dizzy-in-love, telenovela Watch fluffy American Eskimo dog voiced by Jenny Slate), Max construction mobilize friends for a save. These furries are expressed by a veteran cast that includes Albert Brooks, Hannibal Burress and Dana Carvey. Along the way, unlikely friendships are formed many sausages are eaten and there is a Brooklyn Bridge chase sequence that feels just as exciting as an action movie.
"The Secret Life of pet" is not all laughter and excitement. It makes the case for how people treat animals - people are known to flush unwanted snakes or fish, and "free" birds or rabbits - albeit by a very hyper Hart in the form of a small bucktoothed cotton. But it is a good lesson for children and adults who buy the animals.
Parents should know that there is some talk of death, a deadly viper attacked and some other small pieces that are not all warm and fuzzy. But it's no secret, "The Secret Life of pets" is a hilarious account of the relationship we have with our animals, and a little reminder to treat them with love and respect.
